Trust announces $300,000 to assist with the fit out of the Wanaka Recreation Centre
2 Jun 2016
Queenstown Lakes District Council Chief Financial Officer, Stewart Burns said he was delighted with the donation received. “The interior fit out is the last phase in the development it will see the recreation centre amply placed to support the wide range of sporting codes and community uses in Wanaka”
In the first of the Otago Community Trust’s $100,000 - plus funding rounds for 2016, the Trust donated a total of $1.4 million across Otago.
The Trust continues funding the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail in partnership with theFriends of Alps 2 Ocean (A2O) Incorporated and the Waitaki District Council. A $100,000 donation from the trust will help go towards ensuring the trail from Duntroon to Oamaru is moved all off road.
Waitaki District Council Community Services Group manager Thunes Cloete said “the plan with the A2O trail has always been too take the "majority" of the trail off-road. It is safer and it is just a better experience for everyone. We are delighted with the support from the Otago Community Trust. The $100,000 donation will provide the momentum required to secure the additional funding for stages two and three to be completed”.
Otago Community Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger said the investments in large projects like the Otago Museum, Wanaka Recreation Centre and the A2O trail not only benefited people today, they were an investment in the future.
An additional milestone for the Trust in its May donation round was the $90,000 donation to Outward Bound. This sees the Otago Community Trust investment into the programme now surpass $1 million. Since 2002, the Otago Community Trust has sponsored, on an annual basis, scholarships for one student in each of the 25 participating secondary schools in Otago to attend Outward Bound.
“The partnership has seen over 650 students attend the Outward Bound Mind Body Soul course, an achievement we are hugely proud of. There is strong support for the initiative from the schools, which have seen their students experience huge personal growth, often stepping up as leaders in their community” Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger said.
Other organisations benefiting from sizable donations in May included the North End Rowing Club Inc, the Dunedin Civic Orchestra, the Otago Medical Research Foundation and the Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust.
The trust also continued funding for the Skeggs Foundation with a grant of $25,000 to support the development of coaches across multiple sporting codes throughout Otago.
