Roman Catholic South Dunedin Parish, community garden
10 Oct 2013
The development of a Community Centre for the Roman Catholic Diocese at St Patricks Basilica has presented a unique opportunity for the South Dunedin community, one that the Otago Community Trust is supporting.
The South Dunedin Catholic Parish is building a community garden on the Andersons Bay Road site, to complement the existing church and a redeveloped old school building on-site, now a community centre used by Catholic Social Services. The garden will be a green space in the midst of an industrial and large-scale retail area, providing a tranquil retreat for the people of South Dunedin to come in, sit down, and enjoy. The Otago Community Trust has donated $50,000 towards the project.
Stage one is complete, with excavation and drainage done, electrical cables, soil and grass laid, trees planted, and seating organised. Lighting , paths, further planting and an entranceway will be done once earthquake strengthening work is finished on the Basilica – a separate project.
