Media Release

The Otago Community Trust is pleased to announce it has distributed $935,500 to 35 Otago sport development programmes from its Regional Sports funding round in June.

Otago Community Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger explains that the Trust has one round of funding for Regional Sports each year. “The regional sports funding is pivotal to the sustainability of many of our regional sporting bodies. These regional sporting bodies are the umbrella groups that support hundreds of community clubs and local sporting groups across Otago with development programmes” she said.

The largest recipient of funding was Sport Otago, receiving $189,750 this year. This donation supports the outstanding work that Sport Otago, Sport Central, Sport Clutha and Sport Waitaki do within their respective communities to increase participation and build capability within sport.

Sport Otago Chief Executive John Brimble said “the funding support from the Otago Community Trust assists Sport Otago to continue to deliver much needed initiatives and support at the grass roots level, across multiple sporting codes throughout Otago. The funding is an important part of Sport Otago’s operations”.

For the first time the regional sporting fund benefited Parafed Otago ($20,000) and Swimming Otago ($12,000). Duane Donovan spokesperson for Parafed Otago said “We are thrilled with the Trust’s donation, we are extremely proud of our Parafed athletes and this funding will enable us to offer more opportunities for people with a physical disability to take part in sport.  With the support of the Otago Community Trust we can make sure sport is an option for everyone, no matter what their goals, be they social, representing Otago, or even representing New Zealand.”

Other donations in this year’s regional sporting fund include $70,000 to Football South for their coaching and development programme, $38,500 for Snow Sports NZ Inc for athlete and coach development, $25,000 to the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Assn for their events, tournaments and coaching programmes to Otago secondary schools.

June Community Donations

In June community donations, the Otago Community Trust is assisting the Otago Yacht Club with an $80,000 donation to dredge and repair the Otago boat harbour. Otago Yacht Club Treasurer Barry Crane said the silting of the Harbour has meant that there is little navigable channel available to craft wishing to exit and enter the boat harbour at all tides, along with this a number of the pile moorings have become unsafe and will be replaced as part of the project.

“We are delighted to receive the funding support from the Otago Community Trust. While we still have funds to raise, this donation goes a long way toward assisting us and ensuring we maintain safe passage to the harbour for our members and the public” he said.

The Otago Community Trust is also continuing its support of the Fortune Theatre with a $60,000 donation. This provides funding to support the Fortune Theatre’s 2016/17 programme. The programme will continue to build on the success of taking National productions to the regions, with a potential increase of two tours of new New Zealand works proposed for 2017.

A $30,000 donation will assist the Wanaka Primary School, as it seeks to develop a new playground area for its junior school pupils.

Recognising the invaluable work the Straight Up Trust does with vulnerable youth and families in South Dunedin, the Otago Community Trust has donated $12,000 to support the Straight Up Trust's work in the community.

The Trust also has supported Poems in the Waiting Room (NZ) this month, donating $1000 to assist with the cost of building 15 Lilliput Libraries, which will be scattered throughout Dunedin communities.

In total $336,050 was donated to 19 community organisations in June.
