Otago Community Trust, September 2015 Donations
14 Oct 2015
The Otago Community Trust is helping organisations throughout Otago to become more efficient.
A total of $167,686 was donated from the Otago Community Trust in September.
Many of the not-for-profit community wellbeing organisations funded by the Otago Community Trust over the last month are using their capability building donation to improve processes and strengthen their systems of service delivery.
Otago Community Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger said capability building is important to increase organisational effectiveness and raise organisational performance in not-for-profit organisations.
“The capability building funding covers a wide range of small projects that we are finding really make a difference for the individual organisation. These could include developing policies and procedures, implementing quality improvement programmes, strategic planning, introducing results based accountability, or working in partnership with other organisations to share resources,” she said.
A donation to the Catholic Social Services in Dunedin is being used to improve information management systems. Funds Support Manager Paul Barham said the donation is a very practical way for a small organisation to co-ordinate their efforts and resources, and to train staff in information technology.
“Working smarter and creating a paper-less environment gives us clear efficiency gains, but at the same time our management systems are being more robust and secure. So we are seeing a leaner and more efficient organisation that underpins our strategic direction, and that gives us more time to focus on the support programmes we provide. And that’s good for the community,” Mr Barham said.
An $18,000 donation by the Otago Community Trust to purchase a new mobility van for Alexandra has thrilled the Alexandra Community Wheelchair Van Group.
Group Secretary Patricia O'Connor said the current van is well used for health visits and social trips by Alexandra’s two rest homes, the Alexandra Senior Citizens Group and for people with disabilities. However, the van has got to the stage it needed replacing.
“We only had $20,000 still to raise to purchase a new one, so were very excited to be told about the Otago Community Trust’s support,” she said.
The new van will be in place as soon as a hoist has been installed.
The Otago Community Trust is also pleased to be supporting NZ Oamaru Live Stone Art to host the 10th Oamaru Stone Symposium. Artists will begin carving their sculptures on October 24, with the end result being displayed at Friendly Bay during the Heritage Celebrations in Oamaru from November 11 to 15.
The Otago Community Trust donated $3,700 to help the Fine Thyme Theatre Company with its musical production “Breast Wishes,” to be held in Cromwell at the end of October. The community theatre company production is being staged to help raise awareness of breast cancer.
The Otago Community Trust is again supporting the annual Show Me Shorts Film Festival, donating $1,200 to assist with the cost of the 10th festival. Show Me Shorts Film Festival shows the best short films from New Zealand and around the world to the public at over 20 cinemas nationwide every November.
This year the Festival will be in Alexandra’s Central Cinema on November 14, Dunedin’s Rialto Cinema on November 21, and the Limelight Cinema in Oamaru on November 22.
