Otago Community Trust, July 2014 Donations
2 Oct 2014
Funding from the Otago Community Trust is helping two countries explore the emotional impact of world war one on its people.
The Otago Community Trust donated $539,715 to 36 Otago organisations in August, $400,000 of that going towards its Warm Homes programme.
The South Otago Historical Society is hosting a joint exhibition with New Caledonia in February 2015, that contrasts the experiences of the great war on two very difficult colonies and cultures. This is part of the commemorations of the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1.
Society spokesman Gary Ross said the “Never a week goes by” exhibition is a moving and personal look at the local impact of war in two Pacific colonies. The exhibition will feature the stories of five Balclutha soldiers, including the effect on their families. At the same time it details the chronology of war for the people of Noumea, covering themes of grief, hope and heros, and incorporating the indigenous Kanak culture perspective.
Mr Ross said the exhibition was the idea of noted New Caledonian historian Madame Stéphane Pannoux, who saw common themes in the impact of war on the families of small communities. It represents a unique and growing relationship between Balclutha and Noumea, developed when Madame Pannoux visited the area in 2011.
The national standard of the interactive exhibition and its international links also signifies a coming of age for the small South Otago museum. It is planned to tour the exhibition to rural parts of New Zealand up to mid-2016 before it is sent to Noumea.

The Otago Community Trust is also helping to mark the 100 year commemoration. It donated $6000 to the Dunedin Returned and Services Association for the march through Dunedin City to the Railway Station to recreate the first deployment of troops from the Otago and Southland region.
On a different note, the Community Trust is supporting the FIFA under-20 2015 World Cup in Otago, donating $30,000 to towards hosting four football games at the Stadium in June next year.
Football South General Manager Bill Chisholm said the funding has helped to ensure Dunedin is on the programme, and is part of the international football scene on-going. “As well as pleasing fans and inspiring younger generations, bringing these four teams to Dunedin will also be great for the local economy. We will be making sure the event is a total experience, engaging the wider Otago community.”
The Otago Community Trust also gave the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand $4,000 last month to assist with the cost of a week-long residential course for 50 plus New Zealand acting and directing students to develop their appreciation of Shakespeare. It will include public performances.
The Trust donated $6000 to the New Zealand Olympic Luge Association for a tractor to support the facilities operated by the luge, the ice rink and the golf course in Naseby.
