Otago Community Trust, April 2015 Donations
2 Jun 2015
Close to $1 million was granted to Otago organisations by the Otago Community Trust last month.
Forty Otago organisations received $971,250 from the Trust in April. Of that, $393,000 was donated to 10 social service agencies in Otago as part of the Otago Community Trust’s annual social services support.
Otago Youth Wellness Trust Chief Executive Barbara Payton said the Otago Community Trust is a big part of social support across the community.
The Otago Community Trust donated $50,000 to the Wellness Trust which will be used to provide free community-based support mentoring services for young people during 2015.
Mrs Payton said the services are tailored to what each person needs to manage their issues. “We work with the whole person; each dollar spent on the young person helps to manage their risk behaviours, keeping them safe and connected to their community. This benefits the individual and the community they live in – we’vecontributed to making a positive difference to over 5000 young people’s lives since the trust was established in 1996.”

The Otago Community Trust also continues its support of Arts Festival Dunedin, this year donating $175,000 towards the ever-popular biennial event for September and October 2016.
Since it started in 1999, the Trust has backed the Arts Festival Dunedin philosophy of creating a boutique festival in a boutique city that celebrates the excellent and the extra-ordinary. The festival’s innovation and forward thinking approach is set to continue into 2016, with a focus on youth events and keeping entry fees to a minimal, to create greater appeal and attract bigger audiences.
The Otago Community Trust was a significant contributor to the development of the Edgar Centre and the More FM Arena in 1994, and remains a strong supporter.
This month it donated $45,000 to the Dunedin Indoor Sports Venues Trust towards upgrading lighting.
Edgar Centre spokesman Blair Crawford said it’s great that the Trust continues to recognise its value to the community, given the Centre is a much-used facility in Dunedin.
The Otago Community Trust is also continuing to support the Nicol's Blacksmith Historic Trust in Duntroon, North Otago. It has already assisted the Trust to restore the historic blacksmith building, and this month contributed $4,600 towards a sprinkler & security system into the Blacksmith Shop. The move will allow the facility to be open daily to visitors to Duntroon.
The Otago Community Trust also helped to stage the 2015 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival in Central Otago in July, internationally recognised as one of the world’s premier mountain film festival events.
The international and New Zealand-made adventure film competition this year attracted considerable interest from around the globe, with the 71 film finalists set to screen in Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown from July 3-11. Other Festival events include a photography competition, guest speakers, workshops, an adventure film school and writing school, trade show and art exhibition.
