23 Sep 2024
Otago Community Trust is proud to announce the release of its 2023/2024 Annual Report, showcasing a year of remarkable growth, transition, and community impact across the Otago region.
The Trust approved $9.89 million in grants, benefiting over 406 community groups as at 31st March 2024. A standout allocation was the $2 million grant towards the Waitaki Events Centre in Oamaru, set to become a significant asset for the entire Waitaki district.
The Trust's dedication to youth empowerment was evident in the success of its Rangatahi-Led Fund, part of the broader Rangatahi and Tamariki Strategy. This innovative initiative saw four youth groups manage a $100,000 fund pool. In collaboration with Otago Community Trust, they awarded grants of up to $5,000 to inspiring youth-led projects across the region.
The Trust's Impact for Tamariki and Rangatahi Fund also made substantial strides with two major grants. Barnardos Aotearoa received $454,631 for the LEAP social work service in Milton, while the Greater Green Island Community Network Charitable Trust was granted $644,859 for the Wheako Project, both aimed at holistically addressing the needs of children and youth in their respective communities.
Following a challenging year for the Trust’s investments in 2023, funds under management rebounded strongly ending the year at $313.6 million, reflecting an impressive return for the year of 11.7%. “This has positioned the Trust well for the year ahead and strengthens our ability to support local initiatives,” said Andy Kilsby, Chair of the Trust.
The year also marked significant leadership transitions for the Trust. Andy Kilsby was elected as the new Chair, succeeding Diccon Sim, who provided outstanding leadership over the previous five years. The Trust also welcomed new Trustees Robyn McLean, Carole Adair, and Fraser McKenzie. Additionally, Jemma Adams took on the role of Chief Executive, bringing fresh energy and vision to the Trust, along with Jen Stokes who stepped into the Marketing & Communications role.
"This year's Annual Report reflects a period of renewal and growth for Otago Community Trust," said Andy Kilsby, Chair of the Trust. "We're proud of our achievements and excited about the future as we continue to support and empower our communities. By embracing diverse perspectives and forging stronger connections, we can empower communities like never before."
