New Helipad Enhances Emergency Medical Services in Ōwaka!

A critical new medical infrastructure project was completed in The Catlins late last year, with the installation of a purpose-built helipad in Ōwaka that promises to significantly improve emergency medical response times and patient safety.

The Ōwaka Lions Club spearheaded the project to address longstanding challenges with helicopter medical evacuations. Previously, rescue helicopters were forced to land on the local rugby grounds, which often became boggy and treacherous, particularly during the winter months.

The new helipad, located at the entrance of the Recreation Grounds/SAR carpark, features elevated landing surfaces, precision landing lights, and a wind sock to guide pilots. These improvements address critical safety concerns that previously complicated emergency medical transport.

"This is a game-changer for our community," said Gordon Thompson for the Ōwaka Lions Club. "It will reduce risks for both patients and emergency personnel during critical medical evacuations."

The project's scope is significant. With 155 houses in Ōwaka township and approximately 240 households in surrounding areas, an estimated 1,500 local residents will directly benefit. During summer months, when the population swells with visitors, that number can increase to around 5,000.

Graham Gale from Otago Helicopters expressed strong support for the project. Drawing from experiences with similar helipads in Lawrence and Stewart Island, Gale noted that such infrastructure dramatically improves pilot safety and operational efficiency.

The helipad represents more than just a landing site - it's a critical piece of medical infrastructure that could mean the difference between life and death for patients requiring urgent medical transport to Dunedin Hospital.

The project's completion marks the culmination of countless volunteer hours by Gordon and the Lions Club members, over many months to bring this vital infrastructure to fruition. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of community service that has defined the Ōwaka Lions Club, turning a critical need into a lasting legacy for the entire district.
