Funding Stories

Journeys is empowering young women in Alexandra and Central Otago to connect with themselves, others, and the great outdoors through adventure. Founded in 2020, this innovative charitable trust runs mountain biking and hiking programs led by inspiring local female instructors, creating a supportive environment for girls aged 12-18 to develop confidence, resilience, and outdoor skills.

What makes Journeys truly unique is its focus on increasing the visibility of women enjoying outdoor adventures recreationally, rather than relying on professional instructors. This reduces barriers and provides powerful role models that the participants can relate to. The girls-only groups facilitate vulnerability and bonding during unfamiliar challenges.

Journeys is about much more than adventure though - it's a holistic program centred on teenage wellbeing. Participants co-design the activities based on their needs and values, learning leadership skills, and exploring topics like values and self-care. No cost is passed onto families, and outdoor gear is provided to ensure finances aren't an obstacle.
