Central Cinema, Alexandra

27 Feb 2014

A small group of dedicated movie goers have achieved their goal of developing a boutique cinema in Alexandra, with help from the Otago Community Trust.

Central Cinema opened in March 2013, and has already screened the latest block busters including The Great Gatsby, Iron Man, and Kon Tiki, attracting 1500 people in only three months.

The Trust provided $20,000 to help the group purchase a digital projector, the new technology meaning the cinema can show any film that comes out through film distributors, including art house and DVD movies. Central Cinema Inc. Chair Karin Bowen said the facility has made it possible for the people of Central Otago to access film in the same way as those in Dunedin and other centres have been able to do for years. "We are enormously grateful to funders like the Otago Community Trust."
