$20,000 Boost for the Milton Community Health Trust’s - Tokomairiro Community Hub
2 Aug 2016
A $20,000 donation from the Otago Community Trust will assist the Milton Community Health Trust with a building renovation project to upgrade the support and advocacy hub in Milton – the Tokomairiro Community Hub.
The Tokomairiro Community Hub housed in the old BNZ building on the main street of Milton, started with two agencies and has now increased to 14 part-time agencies. The renovation project involves the redevelopment of the building with the aim of future proofing the Hub to ensure it is a user friendly, warm, welcoming, multi-purpose space with adequate offices, privacy and the provision of meeting areas.
Otago Community Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger said “we congratulate the Milton Community Health Trust on all the great work they are doing in the Milton/Bruce area supporting individuals and families. The redevelopment of the Tokomairiro Community Hub will help meet the growing community demands of the area.”
The Otago Community Trust gave a total of $169,270 to 28 community organisations in July.
The Otago Rowing Club received an $18,000 donation to assist with the purchase of new equipment. Club Secretary, David Jackson said “we were thrilled to receive the Trust’s donation as the boats we will purchase will take pressure off our existing fleet and allow us to get more rowers out in the mornings. Having new boats will improve our regatta results thus encouraging our dedicated rowers to keep the Otago region in the forefront of New Zealand Rowing.”
The Otago Community Trust continues a tradition of supporting the Otago Early Childhood & Schools Maori & Pacific Island Festival (Polyfest) via a $9,970 donation. The Festival now in its 22nd year is a unique and dynamic celebration of cultural performance, language and identity. Performers come from early childhood, primary and secondary education centres and schools across Otago to participate. This year’s Polyfest will run from the 12th to the 18th of September and will also feature a performance from Kaitangata School, thanks to a $500 donation from the Otago Community Trust supporting their travel to the festival.
The Otago Community Trust is pleased to support a visit to Dunedin by the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir, who will be a special addition to the Big Sing Finale at the Dunedin Town Hall on the 27th of August. The New Zealand Secondary Students Choir is the national choir for secondary school students, aged 13 to 18 years. The Trust has also provided a $7,000 donation to the NZ Choral Federation - Otago Region to assist with the cost of holding the Big Sing Finale at the Dunedin Town Hall.
